Update 1.4 Brings Matchmaking to Dimensional Double Shift
If there’s one thing we’ve heard loud and clear from the community since the very beginning of Dimensional Double Shift (and we mean way back… before we launched ourselves face-first into Hexas), it’s this:
“Give us matchmaking. Please. Pretty please. With sentient soup on top.”
Well… today’s the day. Welcome, Coworkers! (And thank you for your patience)
Update 1.4 is live, and with it comes a long-awaited, highly-requested feature: matchmaking, also known as Co-Working. This marks the first public tech test of the system, and it’s a major step forward on our journey through the ever-evolving early access chaos dimension.
Well, What Took So Long?
Let’s get into the nuts, bolts, and omnidimensional socket adapters.
Matchmaking has been one of the most consistent player asks since our earliest builds. But crafting a system that works seamlessly in a live VR environment—while keeping the joyful absurdity and collaborative chaos that defines DDS—has been no small feat.
One thing to know about Owlchemy - we weren’t going to rush it. The tools weren’t ready, and frankly, neither were we. But now? The tech has caught up to our ambition, the community’s grown, and we’re ready to see what happens when we throw this system into the mix.
And yes, we want you in there with us!
This version of Co-Working is intentionally solo-only and can be used when taking on Garage and Diner shifts in Treattle. Think of it as matchmaking version zero—a solid, testable foundation. It’s fast. It’s lightweight. And it’s designed to help us gather data, squash bugs, and make things even better!
Here’s how our CEOwl, Andrew E., put it:
The 'lore accurate' reason is that we didn't want to put the same matchmaking everyone else uses in our game. There is no clear way to measure 'cooperative-ness' and playing the full game anonymously was outside what we had envisioned.
The event system was devised to help folks find friends in a new and unique way. Its success, and the way it drives friendships, has shown us we were onto something. Now we’re building on that.
You can now drop into a quick session, and if you vibe with your crew, friend up and take on the bigger adventure.
This solo-only approach helps us keep things focused. We’re watching how fast players find games, how long sessions last, what feels great—and what breaks spectacularly. It’s real-time QA, but way more chaotic. And more fun.
The First Step in Smarter Matchmaking
The best shifts are often the messy, hilarious, team-flailing kind. We know that many of you want to share that experience with your friends, and as of today the Room Browser is your best bet for playing with friends. Introduced with the Hexas update, it allows players to create and share room codes so you can still shift with your favorite pals. Not feeling the Room Browser? Our official Discord has a dedicated channel for teaming up with other dimensional misfits.
This new system doesn’t replace Room Browser. It complements it. We’re not just testing features, we’re evolving how people play together. Matchmaking is the next step in that journey.
Wait—What About Rewards?
Let’s be upfront: you won’t earn shift rewards from matchmaking with Coworkers during this initial test phase.
This was a deliberate choice. We wanted to launch matchmaking as soon as it was playable, without adding reward systems that might distract from core functionality testing. Keeping it simple helps us isolate what’s working and what needs refinement.
Rewards via Room Browser and party codes? Totally unchanged. So if you’re grinding for that next unlock, keep doing your thing—we’re not yanking the quantum rug out from under your shoes.
Feedback: Your Multiverse-Defining Superpower
As outlined in our Player Charter, feedback is the backbone of our development philosophy. Whether it’s praise, critique, or galaxy-brain bug reports, every piece of input helps shape the future of DDS.
This matchmaking test is a direct result of community feedback, and what you tell us now will define what comes next. Want to see duo matchmaking? Party invites? Double Shifts? Tell us.
Spicy takes included. We can handle the heat (and probably throw ALICE at it, just for fun).
Looking Forward: More Dimensions, More Ways to Play
Matchmaking is just one step on the wild, weird, wonderful road to full launch. We're not just building features—we're building an experience. And sometimes that means experimenting. A lot. Failing fast, shifting hard, and having one Hexas of a fun time doing it too.
Then doing it all again with better goggles.
So try it. Break it. Tell us what you love. Tell us what you don’t. Because we are just getting started when it comes to experimentation, and what you say matters.
At the end of the day, you are part of this multiversal experiment. You’re not just playing Dimensional Double Shift. You’re helping build it alongside a team that believes fun shouldn’t require crunch or a second mortgage.
Let’s make beautiful chaos together.
Update 1.4 is live. Your headset is waiting. Shift on in with your fellow Coworkers, the Hexas waters are fine.
